Sash windows parts
The Sash window can be divided into four main parts, which are the sash, the frame, the glass, and the hardware.
The sash is the moveable part of the window that opens and closes. The frame is the stationary part of the window. The glass is what lets light into your home. The hardware includes the locks, handles, sash window stops, fasteners and pulleys that hold everything together.
If you have sash windows on your property, it’s important to know the parts so you know what to do if something breaks and required repair. This article will briefly talk about different parts of the sash window.
The Sashes
The sash is the moving part of the window that sits in the frame and holds glazing and operates using so call pulley and weighs system. It’s what you open and close to let air into your home.
There are two types of sashes: single-hung and double-hung. Single-hung sashes have one movable panel and one fixed panel. Double-hung sashes have two movable panels, so you can open the top or bottom of the window.
The sashes can be single glazed or double glazing, or if they are single glazed they can be double-glazed using our double glazing retrofitting service.
The Frame
The frame is the stationary part of the window, which includes the window sill, architraves, head and other parts. It provides support for the sashes and has a built-in pulley and weight mechanism if it is one of the traditional box sash windows.
Traditional sash window frames are made from wood, more modern ones are made using vinyl, or aluminium. Wood frames are the most common because they’re strong and durable. Vinyl and aluminium frames are less expensive than wood, but they’re not as pleasing.
The Glass, single or double glazing
The glass is what lets light into your home. Traditional box sash windows usually are single glazed, but some can be recently retrofitted with double glazing. The glass is held in place by glazing bars, which are also called muntins. Glazing bars divide the window into smaller panes of glass. They give sash windows their characteristic look. The glass can be affixed using traditional putty or beading.
The Sash window hardware
The Sash window hardware includes the locks, handles, sash window stops, fasteners, and pulleys. Handles let you open and close the window. Sash window stops prevent the window from being opened too far. Fasteners secure the sashes.
Can you repair or replace sash window parts?
If any of the parts of your sash window are broken, you can repair them. If your window sill is rotten, it can be replaced. The cords and pulley system can also be changed. The glass panes can be replaced. As long as the frame is sound, all other parts of the windows can be replaced or renovated.
